John E. McGee, Q.C.

John's primary practice areas are corporate and commercial law. He has significant experience in the incorporation, organization, structuring and financing of businesses. Over the years he has been involved in a number of financings of amounts up to and exceeding $100,000,000. He has acted as counsel in both acquisitions and sales of businesses in all levels of magnitude and complexity. While he is not a specialist in intellectual property, he has acquired considerable experience in the licensing of rights and interests on behalf of individuals and corporations. John has developed expertise in the organization and structuring of aboriginal economic entities. Because of his extensive background in civil litigation in Alberta, Ontario and the Northwest Territories and his appearances at Courts at all levels in those jurisdictions as well as the Supreme Court of Canada, he is qualified and able to advise clients about their rights and obligations with a view to the litigation process.

John was educated in Ottawa and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton University in 1967 and his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Ottawa in 1970. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1972 and to the Bar of Alberta in 1977.



John has been an instructor at the Alberta Bar Admission Course since 1994 and has been a member of the discipline committee of the Law Society of the Northwest Territories.

John received the distinguished designation of "Queen's Counsel Learned in the Law" in 2007.

He is very involved in the community and has been a public Board Member of the Persons with Developmental Disabilities Edmonton Community Board and is currently the Chairperson of another prominent community based association. Over the years he has been the Chairperson and Race Director of the Edmonton Festival Marathon, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of The Excel Society (serving persons with disabilities), a Governor of Grant MacEwan College, Chairperson of Road Events and Race Director for the Marathon and Race Walk events at the 2001 World Track & Field Championships in Edmonton, President of the Kinsmen Club of Edmonton and many other activities.

John has received several awards in recognition of his contributions to the community. In 2000, he received an Award of Excellence from Economic Development Edmonton, in 2004 he was given a “Star” Award by the Alberta Government as the adult “Volunteer of the Year” in the Province and in 2005 an Alberta Centennial Medal.

A runner for more than 25 years and participant in numerous running events, including the New York Marathon, John has recently discovered golf and its challenges.
